SENIOR police officers have accused the police ministry of promoting young, inexperienced members above long-serving employees.

On Monday 400 officers in the Western Cape and 120 in KZN were booked off sick.

“I have raised the issue of sick notes with Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. I hope they are legitimate,” Minister Bheki Cele said yesterday in Centurion, Tshwane.

Minister Cele addressed 1 147 station commanders from across the country and national and provincial management about promotions.

The minister said he would go on a road show and invite constables, sergeants and warrant officers to explain how the issue of promotions should be dealt with in future.

He said promoting officers would cost R2 billion and he has decided to handle these over a three year period.

Cele spoke about the arrest of Harry Gwala mayor Mluleki Ndobe in connection with the murder of former ANC Youth League secretary Sindiso Magaqa.

He also said 150 people had been arrested in KZN for political killings.
