JOY filled the air when a new house was handed over to the Matlhomola Moshoeu’s family in Coligny, North West.
But there was also confrontation.
While waiting for Premier Job Mokgoro to hand over the house built by Gift of the Givers, a scuffle broke out when ANC supporters instructed Agnes Moshoeu, Mathlomola’s mum, to take off her EFF T-shirt.
She refused and EFF supporters arrived to defend her.
Then there was drama when Matlhomola’s father, Saki Dingake, said he invited himself because government did not tell him about the handover.
Calm was restored when Mokgoro arrived. The premier said Matlhomola died because he was a black child accused of stealing sunflowers. He urged South Africans to use Mathlomola’s death as a source of motivation to unite all races.
Gift of the Givers’ Emily Thomas said: “We care about what happened to the child and we hope the house brings joy to the family.”
Agnes Moshoeu said she was grateful for the house but questioned why it was not built in her kasi, Scotland squatter camp.
Matlhomola died in 2017 after falling from a moving vehicle.
Pieter Doorewaard and Phillip Schutte claimed Moshoeu had jumped from the van while they were driving to a police station.
They were sentenced to 18 and 23 years, respectively.
