A FIGHT over a school bag brought lessons to a standstill.

This happened at Ndeya Zenex High School in Zwelisha, south of Durban yesterday.

Two large groups of boys from Mkhazini and Adams villages allegedly got into a fight just before break time.

The boys were apparently armed with knives and sticks.

One of the boys from Mkhazini was accused of stealing a bag belonging to a boy from Adams Mission last month.

Parent Mantombi Mkhize (51) told Daily Sun the boys seem to have had a long-standing grudge from long before the bag was stolen.

“The bag was not stolen yesterday.

“From what we heard, the owner accused a boy from Mkhazini of stealing his bag.

“A fight broke out and the other boys got involved and took sides.”

Lessons were brought to a standstill and parents were called in to fetch their children.

A pupil said they were in the classroom when they heard loud screams.

“The fighting groups were armed with knives and knives. Although no one was seriously hurt, we saw some of the boys bleeding after being stabbed.

“Cops arrived quickly and the group dispersed,” said the pupil.

Another parent, Thami Mvubu (43), said: “We heard that some of boys were planning to attack each other.”

Scelo Khuzwayo, a spokesman for the KZN Education Department, said they were aware of the matter.

“We are looking into it and appeal to the relevant local leadership to work together and help us resolve the matter,” he said.

KZN police spokesman LieutenantColonel Thulani Zwane confirmed cops were called to the scene.

“No case was opened, but we appeal to the injured to contact the cops. The situation is being closely monitored,” he said.
