MANY are wondering whether the police are going to strike on Monday.

“I don’t know,” said Police Minister Bheki Cele.

“If officers go on strike, they are no longer rendering an essential service and they are not allowed to do that.”

Cele said calls for a strike were made by “faceless people” who complained about promotions.

He said there was currently a backlog in the grade progression of employees.

Cele advised officers to report for duty on Monday.

“I would like to call on all members of the police service to uphold their oath of office.

“People who call on police to strike are breaking the law.”

He said they don’t have information about the strike.

“We are not going to prepare for something we don’t know anything about,” he said.

Cele said he will meet the station commanders of the 1 147 cop shops on Monday.

“We will talk about issues of national importance then,” he said.
