Police divers recovered the body of Ndumiso Mzobe 3 metres down, with his legs trapped under a log.

A GROUP of boys decided to go fishing, but never suspected that death was waiting at the river.

One of the boys, Ndumiso Mzobe (16), drowned.

He and his friends went fishing at the Little Amanzimtoti River Lagoon on Monday.

Ndumiso and one of his friends allegedly tried to swim in the river, but Ndumiso got into difficulties and drowned.

A search for his body began after his friends reported the incident.

A resident said it was painful to see the boy’s body being fished out of the river.

“This river is dangerous and deep. Children shouldn’t be allowed to swim or even play near it,” said the resident.

KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident.

She said police divers from Durban Search and Rescue, the Metro police and Life Response EMS were called to a drowning at Baggies Beach, Amanzimtoti.

“A dive operation was conducted and the boy was found at a depth of 3 metres with his legs trapped under a log.

“The body was recovered and handed over to members from Amanzimtoti police,” she said.

An inquest docket has been opened.”
