The Hawks have arrested seven suspects on allegations of corruption, money laundering and fraud.
The suspects aged between 50 and 78 years were detained after what the SAPS call a marathon of investigations into the R1.6-billion said to have been misappropriated in the tender processes for the procurement of various services by the Department of Correctional Services.
The tenders were awarded to Bosasa Operations and its affiliated or subsidiary companies.
The Hawks say the officials allegedly received and accepted gifts in the form of cash, financial assistance in acquiring properties, getting cars from motor dealers and other assets and payments to travel agents for overseas travel.
One of the suspects is yet to be arrested as he is still overseas, but he has been informed that there is a warrant for his arrest.
Another suspect is in Port Elizabeth, but the Hawks say that efforts are underway to bring him back to Pretoria to face the charges.
General Godfrey Lebeya, head of the Hawks said that he appreciates that the attendance of the accused in court is finally secured.
It is a step in the right direction and I am looking forward to the proper conclusion of the matter with a verdict in court,” Lebeya said.
Five of the original eight suspects including three companies are expected to appear today at the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Court.
