UMLAZI cops have warned people to stay sober and, if possible, indoors this festive season.

The cops – who are tired of dealing with unresolved rape, murder and abuse cases – said they would lock up people caught drinking heavily and hanging around street corners.

Police spokeswoman Captain Carmen Rhyen said: “You will be arrested and detained for four hours in holding cells so you can sober up.

“You could also be charged with being drunk in public.”

Rhyen said it was difficult to deal with abuse cases where alcohol was involved.

“Such cases don’t stand a chance in court,” she said.

“A drunk woman may not remember what happened and, as a result, may be unable to give conclusive evidence in court.

“We’re going to prioritise women because they’re more vulnerable.”

Rhyen encouraged residents to drink responsibly.
