AFTER protesting without being listened to, these residents decided to barricade the main road.

Residents of Polar Park in Ekurhuleni put burning tyres, tree branches and stones on the busy M7 road yesterday in an attempt to force the government to listen to their grievances.

They told Daily Sun they were fed up with the power cuts in the area.

Tsidi Kekana (34) said: “For three months, we’ve been living without electricity and when we report it to our councillor, he always tells us the problem will be resolved.”

She said they’ve been patient for too long but they can’t keep quiet any more.

“On Tuesday we decided to protest but no one took us seriously because we were peaceful. We will keep on doing this until our problem is resolved. No matter how long it takes, we will be on the street.”

Councillor Robert Pienaar was called to the protest by residents and addressed them.

Speaking through a loudhailer, he said: “People, you don’t have to worry. Tomorrow, this problem will be history.

“I’m here with a technician from the electricity department. He will go into your area, escorted by the police, and you can show him what the problem is. It will be fixed today.”

Katlehong police spokesman Captain Mega Ndobe confirmed that there had been a protest against poor service delivery.

“Residents barricaded the busy M7 road with tyres and stones. This led to motorists having to use other roads. But the cops were able to clear the road and everything is back to normal,” he said.
