THE SAPS and Department of Correctional Services have launched a manhunt after 16 prisoners that escaped from the Johannesburg Correctional Centre.
The Department’s Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed to Daily Sun that the 16 detainees escaped on Monday morning.
They escaped through a pipe shaft and used an object to break the wall, after which they proceeded to the fence.
A criminal case has been opened by the police and more information will follow.
"We are still compiling their profiles, their names and what crimes they committed, after which we will make the information public," Nxumalo said.
The department appeals to the public to assist with information that may lead to their arrests.
