A fter being a backing vocalist for famous gospel artists, Zwai Ndathi is now flying solo.
And the singer, whose real name is Mzwandile Ndathana, has now switched from gospel to Afro pop.
Zwai has three singles under his belt.
And on 5 September, he released his debut album Makhe Ndithethe.
He told SunBuzz he made the switch to Afro pop after two of his mentors asked him to sing backing vocals for them.
“There were a lot of prominent gospel singers in my church, from the late Lundi Tyamara to Andile B and Thembinkosi Booi,” he said.
“Maisha, a duo from church, switched from gospel to Afro pop.
“They asked me to sing backing vocals for them and I enjoyed it.
“I then realised I could make a career out of it.”
The singer from Eastern Cape was born into a musical family.
His grandparents were choristers and his uncles were opera singers.
“I sang choral music at church,” he said.
He said it was easy for him to sing that type of music.
“I was surrounded by singers at home,” he said.
