The entertainment industry is known for its bright lights, the glitz and glam, the lavish-looking lifestyle and fame, which can often make us forget that celebrities are real human beings with real human problems.
And every now and then, we are confronted with a celebrity who isn’t ashamed to admit that she has battled a lot of hardship.
Nina Hasties is a formidable force in the entertainment industry.
With a 15-year career that spans television, radio, comedy and voice-over work, Nina is an underrated champion entertainer.
But behind the glitzy SABC 3 Trending SA presenter, is a woman who has had to overcome an immense amount of hardship.
In August 2016, Nina shook the country when she revealed to Phat Joe on East Coast Radio that she had been raped on three separate occasions.
Nina says it took her over 10 years to not only open up about it to other people, but even to admit to herself that it wasn’t her fault.
She has also had to overcome drug and alcohol addiction, as well as dealing with mental health issues.
But, she says that it was all part of a greater good.
“I think that it is important, as a country, for our progress as a people, to have a social interpreter that can show us that we are very similar.”
“Even though some of us might have been exposed to more and some of us might have been exposed to less, there’s sometimes so much wealth in having had life test you and try you.”
“I have never been wealthier than when I overcame hardships,” she said.
Nina has now found her voice and she intends on using it.
