Sam Smith usually sings about heartbreak, but this time he broke thousands of hearts when he announced that he has cancelled the remainder of his scheduled concerts in Cape Town.

The singer's first performance in the Mother City, lasted only 45 minutes due to heavy voice strain.

The concert was off to a flying start but  after the singer disappeared for a few minutes, it was announced that the show would no longer be going on.

The "Dancing With a Stranger" hitmaker was still scheduled to perform another two concerts in Cape Town but after a medical examination, it was decided that caution would be the best approach and he was forced to cancel the remaining shows.

Big Concerts issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon, saying:

“This difficult decision was made after Sam sought advice from medical specialists and his team, and after having to cut his show short last night with concerns for his voice.”

“Sam is deeply upset that he is unable to perform for his fans in Cape Town but needs to rest at this time. Big Concerts wishes Sam a speedy recovery and hopes to welcome him back to Cape Town in the future.”
