PHUMZILE Mlangeni is well known for her role of Buyi in the first two seasons of Family Bonds.
These days the 38-year-old delights the listeners of Kasie FM with her traditional music and gospel shows over the weekend.
“I love making people happy and what I do is in harmony with that.”
Phumzile, who was born and raised in Katlehong in Ekurhuleni, said she was involved in traditional Zulu dancing from a young age as a member of the Ubuhle Bentsha cultural group.
Phumzile said thanks to the work she did with the group, she won a best actress award from Ekurhuleni Municipality in 2000.
“It was my first big break and led to my role in Family Bonds. Since then I have had cameo roles in Generations, Rhythm City and eKasi Stories.”
She does the funeral announcements on Thursdays on Kasie FM, a traditional music show on Saturdays and a gospel music programme on Sundays.
“I play the traditional music of all ethnic groups and my listeners have the chance to call in and send dedications.”
For her good work, Phumzile was nominated for the South African Traditional Music and Crown Gospel awards in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Surprisingly, Phumzile has no formal training as an actress or presenter. She said they are talents given by God. Her dream is to work for Ukhozi FM.
