After taking a year off , singer and actor Phila Madlingozi is back to share what he’s learned.
This Sunday, Phila will be performing at Afro-Jazz Sundays at the Barn Theatre at Port Elizabeth Opera House.
He is excited to be performing and sharing the feeling music gives him, with the new sounds he’s been working on.
Phila took the whole of last year off from acting to focus on his music.
He said even though music has always been his first love, he felt like he didn’t give it the love it deserves.
Phila told SunBuzz he has been putting together a band he will be travelling with in future, because he loves live music.
“Last year was about grooming and getting inspiration for my music.
“I’ve been listening to what other musicians are doing and seeing what I can do after exposing myself to different sounds.
“This year will be a presentation of what I have learned from watching what other people are doing.”
Phila came up with the hashtag #FreePhila, which is about not limiting himself to particular genres.
“I want to make music from the soul.
“That is what Free Phila is about.
“I want to share it with people and not have the pressure of doing what is popular because that is what kills most musicians.
“I want to express myself through music according to what I’m feeling and what I’ve learned,” he said.
The musician, who was part of the South African Idols in 2015, said people should look forward to him as a new star, because he will be bringing them Madlingozi 2.0.
“I will be performing my original songs, sharing music from my dad Ringo and some of my favourite artists from around the world.
“The theme of my performance is love and black pride. I’m hoping to heal and to allow people to feel and see things through music,” he said.
