VETERAN actress Florence Masebe’s fight for the Protection of Performers Bill has yielded favourable results.
This as the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) has passed the Bill that will protect performers from being exploited.
This means they will get residual fees for their work, as they did not get that before the Bill was passed.Actors have been fighting for this Bill for years – and now finally they can heave a sigh of relief. The actress broke the news on her social media.
“Yes. They passed the #PerformersProtectionAmendmentBil,” she wrote.
She told Sun Buzz that they were tired of being exploited by broadcasters, who sell their work to other overseas broadcasters without paying them royalties.
“We are tired of working for years and not being compensated for our hard work,” she said.
She said for a long time broadcasters have gotten away with exploiting them and not paying them their residual fees, because they were not forced to.
“There was no legal framework protecting actors from exploitation, which is why we were so exploited”. Said Florence.
