Gospel group Abathandwa will always deliver to its fans.
The group, which is known for its hit single Umoya Wami, was formed in 2009.
“We’ve always been together, even before we got into the music industry,” said lead singer Percy Nyoka.
“We grew up together, went to the same schools, and attend the same church.
“Some of the group’s members left to look for jobs while others furthered their studies.
“The rest of us worked on our music careers.”
Percy said they got their big break in 2016 when they took a risk and drove to Cape Town to meet late gospel musician Sfiso Ncwane.
“We saw a poster of an event he was going to be performing at in Cape Town, so we rented a taxi.
“We didn’t have the R25 000 the driver wanted but we rented the taxi and drove to Cape Town anyway.
“When we got there we met him and he liked us, our music and what we stood for.
“That’s when we started to work with him.”
The group released its debut album Amagatsha last year.
Abathandwa will release the single Udondolo Lwami and record a live DVD in April.
“We didn’t plan to release Umoya Wami but people saw videos of us singing and wanted us to record it.
“We released it because our fans wanted it.
“We will do the same with Udondolo Lwami.
“Whatever the fans want, we will give to them.”
Abathandwa was nominated in the Best Gospel Music Video, Best Gospel A capella, Best Gospel Group and Song of the Year categories at this year’s SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards.
