AMACALA hit-maker and award-winning singer Siphokazi Mohapi is happy to be honoured by her own people.
The songbird was awarded a Princess Stella Sigcau II Award for her contribution to the music industry.
This was during the Pondo Culture and Heritage Festival held at Matshona Village in Ntabankulu, Eastern Cape, on Saturday.
Siphokazi was born and raised in Lusikisiki under the rule of Amampondo Aseqaukeni.
She said: “I believe Amampondo are unique, humble and proud people. I have noticed that many tribes look down on us and I am on a mission to find out why and to change that.”
Earlier this year she released an album titled Siphokazi, which has received seven nominations including the South African Music Awards, South African Traditional Music Awards and the Ingoma Awards.
“I believe everything happens for a reason and this award makes me feel very proud. It is rare for your own people to recognise your work,” she said.
The married mum of two said: “Marriage is something new, but because I was not forced into it, I am loving it.
“I learn something new every day. My boys keep me on my toes, but I am happy to be juggling music with my home life.”
Siphokazi is also featured on Benjamin Dube’s upcoming live album.
Other artists given awards were gospel singers Lusanda Mcinga and Butho Vuthela.
