This year’s Grammy Awards were all about the females and leading the pack was none other than, Cardi B.

The rap sensation made history when she became the first solo female act to win the Best Rap Album.

The only other female artist to have been given a nod in this category was Lauryn Hill in 1997 when she won as part of the iconic Hip-Hop group, Fugees.

Cardi, who collected her award in a stunning white gown, completely lost her cool when she was announced as the victor.

An emotional and nervous Cardi accepted her award with rapper-husband Offset holding on to her arm while she thanked her daughter, Kulture for the motivation to finish the album.

"The nerves are so bad. Maybe I need to start smoking weed. I just want to say thank you everybody that was involved ... I want to thank my daughter. When I found out I was pregnant my album was not complete. I had three songs that I was for sure of having. And we were like ‘we have to get this album done so I could shoot these videos while I’m still not showing,” she said.

The 61st annual Grammy Awards took place on Sunday in Los Angeles where female artists dominated and took home top honours such as Album of the Year and Best New Artist.

In a history-defining moment, the 2019 awards also saw six female acts being nominated in the Best New Artist category.

Additionally, out of the eight Album of the Year nominees, five of them were women.
