Disney’s Marvel Studio superhero movie, Black Panther has received a staggering seven nominations at the 2019 Oscar Awards and one of them is history-making.
The cultural sensation has become the first superhero movie to be nominated in the Best Picture category ever.
This is the climax in a long line of firsts for the film, which has changed the face of superhero films for all time.
Not only was the movie one of the highest grossing movies of 2018 worldwide, it was actually the highest grossing film of 2018 in North America.
And all of this for the first black superhero movie to be made by Marvel.
And fans are overjoyed to have the prestigious Oscar awards giving the film the acknowledgement it deserves.
In addition to the Best Picture nod, the blockbuster has also received nominations in the costume design, original score, original song (Kendrick Lamar), production design, sound mixing and sound editing categories.
The film has an all-star American cast who, together with local favourites, John Kani, Connie Chiume, and Atandwa Kani, put on one of the greatest productions of our time.
All the nominations for the 91st Oscars were announced on Tuesday in the USA and the awards ceremony will be broadcast live on 24 February (Monday, 25 February at 3 am South African time).
