Rapper Big Star is all about evolution.
Previously known as Big Star Johnson, the 2015 winner of the popular local hip hop TV show, Vuzu Hustle, said he has grown as a musician.
And the rapper whose real name is Tumelo Rakumako said his fans would notice a change in his debut album.
According to Big Star, Mzansi can catch a glimpse of his new sound in his latest single, Time of My Life.
“If you look at the local hip hop sound, there are no tracks you can listen to when you just want to chill and relax.
“It’s always about dancing and having a good time, forcing those who want to be mellow to turn to American artists.”
The 25-year-old from Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni said he wanted to change the game.
“When you listen to my latest single you’ll feel something. That’s where I’m heading with my music. I want to evoke emotions,” said Big Star.
“When I first released music, my focus was on what was hot at the time. People who watched me back in the Vuzu Hustle days will notice my sound has matured.”
He told SunBuzz the art of making great music lies in challenging yourself to always come up with new things.
“When you stick to what’s popular, you don’t get a chance to explore the vastness of music and try out new things.
“The music I’m working on is set to take listeners to a different world.”
His album will lift listeners’ spirits.
“I’ve sampled old songs that made our childhood memories fun,” he said.
“My new sound is set to open your mind while setting the tone for good mellow hip-hop music.”
