BROADCASTER Musa Mabika’s passion for radio has paid off.
The 37-year-old from KZN bagged the best personality of the year award at the National Community Radio Week Awards in Bloemfontein last week.
Musa, who’s known to his listeners as DJ Ghetto and works at Inanda FM, said the award is the highlight of his career.
“I love radio. It’s always on my mind in everything I do.
“I always think how I can use it to improve people’s lives.”
He said he’s worked at five community radio stations.
“I’ve won an award at each of them because being on radio is a passion-driven career.
“I’m not where I want to be, but I’m glad that people at national level have recognised my talent.”
DJ Ghetto said another highlight of his career was winning the chairman’s award for outstanding performance at KZN-based Maputaland Community Radio.
When he was at Alex FM’s afternoon drive show in Joburg, he was crowned the most reliable weekday presenter.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout the years,” said DJ Ghetto.
“It’s great to see my hard work and dedication in serving the community doesn’t go unnoticed.
“It’s not only about talent because the recognition wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for listeners and management.”
He also likes to help less fortunate people.
Every year, he celebrates his birthday by donating school shoes, uniforms and stationery to pupils from poor communities.
“I used to go to school in a torn uniform because my parents couldn’t afford a new one,” he said.
“Sometimes, I’d go to bed on an empty stomach. Kids in our community face similar challenges today.”
