One of the saddest and most alarming facts about gender-based violence and domestic abuse is that most of us know of, have seen, heard or are the victim of this abuse.
Our country has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world.
And when a story breaks about a public figure suffering abuse at the hands of their lover, more and more stories are bound to come out.
The exposing of the story gives a voice a lot of people who might have been embarrassed or scared to speak up.
One person who has now come out to share the emotional havoc that abuse can wreak on a family is Motswako rapper, Jabulani Tsambo better known as HHP.
The rapper took to social media to share how heartbroken he is to learn that Babes Wodumo has allegedly been physically abused by her ex-fiancé Mampintsha.
“This broke my heart so much. Was listening to this interview with my son,” he started.
He then went on to reveal that the whole thing just reminded him of his own mother being abused.
“My heart bleeds for Babes. #ThinkingAboutMyOwnMother. I feel like I can never hit a woman after seeing it done to her. #OLady. The humiliation? The fear? The 03h13 non-stop tears on my bed @ 11yrs when I had to be up for school at 06h00?! It’s all too sad. Woman hurt so much,” HHP said.
The Harambe hit-maker also called people who use their physical strength to dominate another, cowards.
“O setlaela (you’re stupid). U use fists because u lack vocabulary to put together a sensible sentence together. In the same breath, the word #EmotionalAbuse gets tossed around a LOT. Someone pls define it,” he said.
He went on to join the chorus of people calling for the protection of Babes.
He said that instead of using her story to sell newspapers, we should all be concerned with lending a helping hand first.
“All I’m saying is we never know people’s real motives. I’m glad it’s out in the open and Babes can seek help. But let us be careful of NOT #MerchandisingSomeonesMisfortunes. Babes needs family, protection, her pastor, God. Not the media, twitter support or another Drum mag cover,” HHP said.
