LAST night, the Feathers saw glitz and drama at the awards’ 10th anniversary held at the Joburg City Hall in Gauteng.
The night was filled with fun and a slick commentary from MC Somizi Mhlongo.
Awards were handed out to AKA and Matlapa for being the Drama Queens of the Year, while Rami Chuene received the Fag Hag Award and Steve and Lucy Letsike were awarded Cutest Couple.
Awards co-founder Thami Kotlolo explained how the event has grown from a cheeky, controversial affair into a platform that now also involves community projects during the year.
“We currently host community dialogues in urban and rural areas, which discuss issues about LGBTIQ+ rights, needs and interests and training of police, in partnership with the Gauteng Community Safety Department, to increase safety and reduce victimisation,” he said.
Thami said making it to 10 years was a dream come true and he was inspired by the support they have received over the years.
“There’s no way we would have made it this far without support.
“It hasn’t been easy either.
“We address issues that many consider sensitive and they’d rather play safe and not get involved.
“So we don’t take the many artists, activists, public personalities, partners and sponsors who’ve been tireless in their support for granted,” he said.
The evening included performances by Nhlanhla Nciza, the Mzansi Gay Choir and Zoe Modiga.
There was also a surprise appearance by reality TV stars Evodia “Madame” Mogase and her daughter Mercy.
