ACTRESS Mmabatho Mogomotsi is part of a play making history at  the Market Theatre!

She will star in the first ever Setswana play, titled Lepatata, which starts next week.

The seasoned actress said she was grateful to be part of this wonderful moment in the history of the performing arts in Mzansi.

“This play was a long time coming.

“Not that it was wrong to host plays in English at the theatre but now we have an opportunity to tell our stories in our own languages,” she said.

Mmabatho plays the role of Mma Masilo, who was forced into an arranged marriage but ended up using that situation to free herself and fight for her own rights.

“This play is significant, especially as it is Women’s Month,” Mmabatho said.

She added that Mma Masilo goes through an emotional cycle, as she doubts herself and feels worthless but eventually decides to reaffirm herself by being selfish about her own needs.

She told SunBuzz that rehearsing for the show was refreshing because the cast had been communicating in Setswana throughout.

“It’s so exciting to go to work and be able to unashamedly communicate in your own language,” she said.

Catch Lepatata at the Market Theatre from 12 – 30 August.
