THIS year’s Samas will be in honour of late rapper HHP.
Jabba, as he was popularly known, will be given a Lifetime Achievement award.
The singer, whose real name was Jabulani Tsambo, took his life at his Joburg home last year.
Born in Mahikeng, North West, he was a pioneer of motswako.
The musician has also been nominated in the Best Hip Hop Album category.
Jabba will be honoured alongside kwaito legends TKZee and 1990s group Mango Groove.
TKZee, made up of Kabelo Mabalane, Zwai Bala and Tokollo Tshabalala, made a huge impact on kwaito with their hit songs Palafala and Shibobo.
Mango Groove was started 35 years ago with the aim of blending marabi and kwela. They took the country by storm with hits such as Special Star, Another Country and Moments Away.
Recording Industry of South Africa CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said they were proud to honour the musical giants at the awards’ 25th anniversary.
North West Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs MEC Ontlametse Mochware said a Lifetime Achievement award was the highest honour an artist could earn.
“This is a reflection of the influence and impact of HHP, Mango Groove and TKZee. As a province, we are happy that our own HHP is one of the legends being recognised this year,” she said.
The awards ceremony will take place at Sun City next Saturday and will be broadcast on SABC1
