We were all excited when we voted for the first democratic government.

We had what was called a government of national unity.

One would believe its mission was to unite black and white people under one Constitution, which will be applicable to all citizens.

We then saw the introduction of chapter nine institutions emerging, such as the office of the public protector, the Ipid and the Human Rights Commission.

What and for whom were the institutions formed?

What was the reasoning behind such watchdogs?

It’s so confusing to realise that we tend to not apply our minds correctly in order for these institutions to be functional.

My question is: did we foresee that such institutions would be undermined in our democracy, which is marred by corruption?
