Travel Hacks - get cheaper rates  ~

With winter here in SA, you might need a bit of a breather to a warmer destination and you don't have to spend an arm and a leg if you know these hacks.

The holiday season is fast approaching and preparing for now will be a whole lot better than rushing everything all at one go.

South Africa has improved its ranking – rising to 50th in the world with its local passport now allowing residents to travel to 102 countries visa-free.

More South Africans are now travelling abroad and that is such a big deal for SA.

Here are top 5 tips on booking a holiday to ensure you get the best rate and value  regardless of the rand’s movement.

1. Book Early

As many times as you might come across this advise, it never gets old and it works. Booking early affords you the comfortability to choose among the available options and discounts.

2. Use Incognito mode to book flights

Based on the cookies in your browser, flight prices do increase when a particular route is repeatedly searched, as the site wants to scare you into booking the flight quickly before prices get even higher. Always search for flights in incognito or private browsing mode to see the lowest prices.

3. Choose visa-free destinations

Choosing a holiday destination that does not require a visa for South Africans is another easy way to trim down on holiday costs.

4. Check if it's cheaper to hire a car or use Uber during your stay

5. Don't pre-pay for fuel

Car rental companies make a large profit on insurance, and will often insist that you require it. Unless you have to (and you may not), don't!

There are 4 ways that you can be covered for car insurance without buying it from a rental company:

- Your credit card – check your card conditions and if rental coverage is included, make sure you book with that card to validate it, and understand the policy beforehand.

- Regular (at-home) car insurance sometimes covers rentals too, call to check.

-Travel insurance sometimes covers rentals, call & check.

-Independent car rental insurance.
