Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has recovered from Covid-19. 

According to SAPS spokeswoman Brigadier Mathapelo Peters told Daily Sun that the Commissioner came back to the office with renewed energy. 

"He self isolated for 14 days  after receiving news that he tested positive for Covid-19 . He had  severe flu symptoms and initially tested.," said Peters. 

Peters explained that the Commissioner has been at the forefront of monitoring the enforcement of the country’s COVID-19 Disaster Management Lockdown Regulations around Gauteng." At the same time, he has equally been at the forefront of the integrated weekly O Kae Molao operations, to ensure that the enforcement of the lockdown regulations is balanced," she said. 

Peters said upon discovering that the Commissioner is positive, management and staff was informed. " arrangements to decontaminate the Provincial Office in Parktown were made. close contacts were screened and tested but service delivery at the provincial headquarters were not interrupted, said Peters. 

Mawela extended a word of appreciation to all law enforcement agencies in collaboration with the SANDF, for ensuring that service delivery is not interrupted during this time.

"I also want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all our members who have succumbed to the virus in the past weeks and we could not pay our respects as we would traditionally do conducting official funerals. Their names will never be forgotten. To those who have contracted the virus and are still on the journey to recovery, I wish them a speedy and smooth recovery. Mental strength is key during this journey," said Mawela.
