The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service, continues to provide laboratory-based surveillance to inform the public health response towards COVID-19 in South Africa.

Today the institute reports 3 049 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 579 428. This increase represents a 9.2% positivity rate. 

Due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health (NDoH), there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported. Today, the NDoH reports 114 deaths and of these, 13 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 94 063 to date.

Today the institute reports 4,592 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3,556,633. This increase represents a 12.5% % positivity rate.

Due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health (NDoH), there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported. Today, the NDoH reports 161 deaths and of these, 64 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 93,278 to date.

A total of 40,318 tests were conducted in the last 24hrs, with 5,244 new cases, which represents a 13% positivity rate. A further 59 #COVID19 related deaths have occurred, bringing total fatalities to 93,117 to date.

THURSDAY, 13 JANUARY 2022

A total of 41,438 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, with 5,920 new cases, which represents a 14.3% positivity rate.

Today, the National Department of Health (NDoH) reports 159 deaths due to a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases. Of these, 51 occurred in the past 24 - 48 hours.
