THE North West health department has received a total of 3 900 Covid-19 vaccine doses.
The batch will be shared between workers at Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg and Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp.
The vaccine roll-out starts at both hospitals today.
The vaccine from Johnson & Johnson will be rolled out in three phases with four categories.
Category one is for health personnel with a high chance of exposure, and two is for personnel who work in areas with suspected infections.
Category three is for personnel with a lower risk and four is for people who aren’t likely to be in contact with the virus.
A total of 43 provincial vaccination centres have been identified for the three phases, which include the public and private sectors.
MEC Madoda Sambatha called on the public to stop self-medicating.
“Doctors and nurses will not debate which vaccine they administer,” he said.
Premier Job Mokgoro said preventing the spread of the virus was not the responsibility of the government alone.
“When you look at a pandemic such as Covid-19, virtually the entire population of the world, irrespective of their idealogical learnings, have handed over responsibility for their survival to governments.”
He urged citizens to exercise caution and adhere to safety protocols.
