Actress Zandile Msutwana, who plays the lead role on Mzansi Magic’s drama series Grootboom and Sons, was overjoyed when she was approached for the role on the show.

Speaking to SunBuzz, the seasoned actress, who plays Funeka on the show, said she was extremely grateful for the role.

“This is because work doesn’t come easily due to the pandemic, but more than anything I was looking for a new challenge,” she said.

Zandile, who is best known for playing the role of Vuyiswa on another Mzansi Magic show, The Queen, described Funeka as devious, manipulative, selfish and stylish.

“She’s quite vain and she was such a challenge to portray but research helped tremendously,” she said.

She said people are going to love her manipulative ways as viewers tend to take a liking to villains.

Zandile, whose career in the acting industry spans decades, has been part of many shows such as Soul City, Zabalaza and Igazi.

She said she owes her longevity in this cutthroat industry to viewers who constantly support her.

“I am nothing without them and their continuous support.

“But I also attribute it to how I conduct myself at work, my professionalism, the gift I’ve been given which I have backed up with my studies, understanding the technical side of filmmaking and the universe granting me with opportunities and workspaces that are suited for me,” she said.

Although she has a long list of productions attached to her name, she said it hasn’t always been easy.

“My journey came with quite a lot of uncertainty and that’s the nature of the industry,” she said.

Zandile is a very private person, and she hardly ever shares the intimate parts of her life.

When asked why she is so private, the actress said she is always puzzled by how they are expected to share their private lives with the public while other professions don’t require it.

“So, my approach is on the basis of work and treating it as a respectable profession that it is to me,” she said. “Everything else that it comes with, about people’s private lives, is gossip,” she said.
