The Soweto Arts Festival Expo is turning 37 this year and is taking the celebrations back to Soweto.
It kicked off on Saturday, when it was launched at Sakhumzi in Vilakazi Street, Orlando East.
Executive director for the project Zama Qampi said this year the festival is focused on making Soweto great again.
He told SunBuzz: “Over the past years, some of our events weren’t held in Soweto, but that is changing this year.
“Every event on our calendar is going to be held in Soweto. This festival should benefit the people of Soweto because it is for them. This year we also celebrate the people who contributed to Soweto and made it great.”

Zama said they have events planned for this month until 5 December.
“We start with the Soweto International Film Festival, which will be launched on 22 November at Maponya Mall, then the Dr Richard Maponya Golf Challenge, where we’ll invite veterans who have built Soweto to come play.
“There are also the Soweto Nations Building Awards, which will thank people who have contributed to the township,” he said.
“We also have Miss Soweto on 28 November. To include the younger generation, there is also Mr & Miss Toddler South Africa. There’s also quite a big one, Soweto’s Got Talent.
“The big winners will go to KZN at the South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards and perform,” said Zama.
He advised people to come out and enjoy the festival.
“This is the perfect way to end the year and also put people from Soweto on the map.
“It will be a great festival and we invite everyone from Soweto and Mzansi as a whole to experience it with us,” said Zama.
