WAX sculptor Lungelo Gumede can now call himself a doctor.
Lungelo announced on Saturday he had been awarded a doctorate in arts and wax sculpting by Good Shepherd College in November.
Lungelo said when the college in Empangeni, KZN, awarded him the honour, the news was not made public as events were restricted by lockdown regulations.
Officially announcing the news on Facebook, he wrote: “Well, let me tell you why they call me a doctor.
“There’s no other art doctor except for me. This is called a doctorate in associate of arts and wax sculpting.
“I’m the one and only recipient of this honorary degree. You can’t study, ask or even apply for it but it’s earned. It’s a once in a lifetime special achievement.”
His friends and fans soon replied to congratulate him on the news.
Zweli King Dlomo wrote: “You are a great role model for kids in rural areas, townships and across Africa. At your age, you have truly set the bar very high for those who come after you. Well done, young man. You have truly inspired a generation.”
Thakane Mshengu Shabalala said: “You deserve all the good things because you make a difference in our lives.”
Nelly Nkosi wrote: “You deserve it. I’ve followed you on Facebook for 10 years. You are proof that dreams go together with action. You did not wait for someone to come save you. You saved yourself.”
Lungelo said his graduation took place in November.
“Now I feel it’s time for me to announce I’m a doctor in this field. It’s a big achievement and I’ll be hosting an official event to formally introduce myself as a doctor.”
He said the degree has encouraged him to work even harder.
