AWARD-WINNING musician Vusi Nova recently hosted a listening session for his album Ngu Mama, which he released at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The album, which has a theme of gratitude and love, was dedicated to his late mum who was his pillar of strength.

The Afro-pop singer said sharing pieces of his mother has allowed him to heal from the loss.

“My mum died in 2005 but the wound still feels fresh,” he said.

“Every time I speak or sing about her, I heal. This album is just a piece of me sharing the love I experienced in the short time she was alive,” he added.

With the lockdown regulations being eased, Vusi hosted an intimate listening session for the album with close friends and family at the scenic Hotel Sky in Sandton.

The event was attended by his best friends Somizi Mhlongo, Ndo Maleho, Busiswa Gqulu, Idols SA season 15 winner Luyolo Yiba and Afro-soul singer, Mali Soul.

He treated guests to five-star canapes and drinks.

“Small intimate gatherings mean that people really get to know who I am and interact with me properly,” Vusi said.

“This project means a lot to me. I got to be very vulnerable. For the first time, Somizi saw me cry. I do cry, but he had never seen me weep.”

In the album, Vusi features his best friend, Somizi.

Somizi described the journey and working with Vusi on the album as emotional.

“Vusi is very professional and takes his work incredibly seriously. I was expecting Vusi to coach me on the day of the recording of the song, but I went in there and did one take and walked out of the studio. I walked out of the studio and wept because it meant so much to him,” Somizi said.

Commenting on their friendship, Vusi says they have come a long way.

“We always joke about the rumours of us dating, and we sometimes entertain it," he said.

"But ours is a genuine friendship. We support each other and we see each other grow and live through challenges is what has strengthened our friendship."
