GRADUATION season is upon us, but many graduates won’t be able to attend ceremonies due to the lockdown.

Ukhozi FM presenters Siya Mhlongo and Selbyonce Mkhize have come up with a plan to help graduates.

The 12 2 3 Cafe presenters decided to unofficially award graduates their qualifications.

This is done telephonically, with the presenters calling graduates.

Graduates state their academic institution, followed by the qualification.

Selbyonce acts as vice-chancellor and awards the qualification.

Speaking on behalf of Ukhozi FM, SABC spokeswoman Mmoni Seapolelo said: “This feature was inspired by graduates who were feeling demotivated by graduation ceremonies being put on hold due to the lockdown.

“The 12 2 3 Cafe team came up with the graduation feature, where those who received their qualifications are celebrated on air.

“The purpose of this initiative is to bring hope to graduates who’ve toiled for years for their qualifications.”

Through this feature, graduates are reminded their hard work was not in vain and that receiving a qualification is a great achievement, with or without the ceremony.

“It must also be noted that while listeners send the station information on their prospective graduation, there’s always a disclaimer by the presenters that Ukhozi FM is not a higher education institution and the station trusts that listeners are honest with their submissions.

“The programme has been well received by the show’s 2,259 million listeners.”
