HLOBISILE “DJ Hlo” Mthalane is furious following a backlash from the public.

Ukhozi FM listeners are not happy that her song, Isibani, is sitting at the top with 55 448 votes.

At least 28 000 votes are needed in order to close the gap between DJ Hlo and her rivals.

But this milestone did not sit well with the listeners, who rejected her when they saw the numbers.

They complained that they did not know her or the song.

Samke Zondo wrote: “But who are you? Asikwazi.”

Nhlanhlenhle Fuze commented: “But what nonsense is this? Do you really want us to cross over with this song? I’m sure you’re voting for yourself.”

Comedian Sfiso “Tsoro” Thutshini wrote: “This song is getting popular for being unpopular.”

But a number of her followers defended her.

Vezi WakwaSthenjwa said: “It’s quite obvious that she bought airtime for people to vote for her. Other musicians can do the same.”

Thamsanqa Zikalala posted: “They keep saying they don’t know you, but some of us know your music. And we are voting and not talking.”

Speaking to Daily Sun, DJ Hlo said: “Last year I entered this competition and I made it to the top five. I wanted to win but that didn’t happen. Obviously, I went back to the drawing board and worked harder. I’ve grown. I am doing campaigns and marketing my music. But more importantly, I have loyal and supportive fans, both in South Africa and abroad, who are voting me. In addition to that, I’m always on the road canvassing for votes.”

She added that two weeks earlier, her song was at number one on the radio monitor.

“The same song was also in the UK charts, and that should count for something. But what is disturbing me more is that some of these people know me and my music, but have decided to be on a witch-hunt. They are sabotaging my music and I don’t know what they have to gain.”

She said the criticism would not discourage her.

“If this is the price to pay for leading the pack, then so be it. But I’m not going to waste my energy on negativity. Instead, I’ll fight even more.”
