ACTRESS Thuso Mbedu is living the American dream. The South African actress was featured in Elle Magazine’s recent issue as Hollywood’s Rising Star.
Thuso took to Twitter to celebrate being in the magazine and thanked them for featuring her.
She spoke about her recent show, Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad, her career, moving to the USA, and about her character Cora on The Underground Railroad.
Thuso told Elle Magazine that being on The Underground Railroad was a big win for Mzansi.
“When I step into a new role, I don’t think about what it means beyond the craft. It’s an opportunity to challenge myself and fulfill my purpose,” she said.
“But this is a great win for (South Africans), which makes me very happy. I come from a place where working in Hollywood is a nice dream to have, not necessarily attainable. Now it feels like nothing is impossible.”

Thuso told the magazine she sees similarities between her and Cora and between black Americans and black South Africans.
“I’m older than our democracy, so apartheid is still very fresh for us,” she said.
“The system that governs the black body has made it so that we’re unaware of the real history of the black body. Doing that research, it was absolutely heartbreaking for me.
“Both Cora and I are without parents. Having lost my mother and my father, whom I never knew, and eventually losing my grandmother in 2014, it got to a point where I kept to myself, I kept in my head – the same with Cora.”
Coming 2 America actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who’s also making big moves in the USA, also posted two short videos of herself getting the Hollywood Reporter magazine, which she was featured in.
Nomzamo danced and rejoiced after turning to the page where her article is.
