THE race for Ukhozi FM’s top seat is on again.
While those who had applied for the station manager position last year were still waiting to hear whether or not they had made it, the SABC started the race again.
The public broadcaster was expected to announce a successful candidate after the applications and interviews were done last year.
But the position was re-advertised on its website on 3 June and, according to the website, the deadline was 11 June.
Programmes manager Zandile Tembe and acting station manager Sbongi Ngcobo, who also serves as a permanent marketing manager, are said to be in the race for the position.
There have been reports of conflict among management, in which Zandile allegedly felt disrespected and overlooked.
The insider said: “Sbongi feels she’s done a good job as an acting station manager because listenership has stabilised during her term.
“And she feels she deserves a permanent appointment. On the other hand, Zandile also feels she’s the suitable candidate for the position since the programmes she’s been heading for years are doing well.
“It’s an interesting race.”
Another informant said:the SABC is considering appointing an candidate outside Ukhozi FM to restore peace. “If one of them gets the position, the situation won’t get better.”Instead, conflict will escalate within management.”We don’t know what’s going to happen. Let’s wait and see. But the reason for the SABC to re-advertise the position is because they haven’t found a suitable candidate,” said the mole.
Station manager position was held by Bonga Mpanza who was then appointed as the acting SABC KZN regional manager before he resigned in January last year following the foreinsic investigation after the alleged corruption accusations.
Ukhozi FM has been operating without a permanent station manager since 2018.
Mmoni Seapolelo, the SABC’s acting spokesperson, said: “The SABC can confirm that it went through a lengthy recruitment moratorium between 2018 and 2019, which was subsequently lifted at the end of last year. The SABC is now in a position to finalise the recruitment process of Ukhozi FM’s station manager. Hence there’s an advertisement.”
She said the public would be informed once the process is finalised.“Until then the corporation wishes to be given the space to conclude this process in line with our policies,” said Seapolelo.
