Actress Mbalenhle “Mbali” Mavimbela has scored herself a major role.

The actress, who has previously appeared on big shows such as Uzalo and Durban Gen, has landed the lead role of Nothile on SABC1’s drama series Skeem Saam.

Speaking to SunBuzz, Mbali said she was over the moon when she received a callback.

“The first person I called was my sister because in some way she manifested me getting the role as she started calling me by my character’s name way before I got the role,” she said.

Mbali said portraying Nothile has been nothing but bliss.

“I enjoy stepping into her shoes because just like her, I always stand up for myself and speak my mind,” she said.

The 24-year-old actress said portraying Nothile hasn’t been difficult for her.

“Instead, it has challenged me as a performer to showcase how versatile I am.

“But one thing I can say is that playing a villain is emotionally taxing, and especially with Nothile who isn’t an obvious villain. She is always smiling and calm, so that takes a toll,” she shared.

The KZN-born actress, who was part of the now canned e.tv drama series Isipho, said it hit her hard when the show was shelved as she thought that would be her breakout role.

“I went through a lot after the show ended because I left home and moved to Joburg.

“It was traumatic and for me it was a rude awakening that anything could happen and your job is not guaranteed.

“But I have grown from that and more than anything, it humbled me.”

Mbali said she wants to be an inspiration among her peers.

Regarding her character Nothile, she said people can expect to be blown away in the next few days.

“I can’t give much away but people should expect drama especially to do with Lehasa. It is definitely going to keep everyone on the edge of their seats,” she said.
