MUSICIAN Sjava has teamed up with producer Mfanafuthi “Ruff” Nkosi to start a new record label, 1020 Cartel.
The label is set to release its first offering iSambulo, a collaboration between the label’s artists, next month.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Sjava, whose real name is Jabulani Makhubo, said: “I am really excited about this label because at its core, we’re activating a movement which promotes excellence in the arts.
“We are planning to achieve a lot and our main aim is not to compete with any existing record label.
Sjava said the label had nothing to do with his departure from Ambitiouz Entertainment.
“The idea of starting my own record label has always been there and one of the things that inspired the label was that I am a creator, more than a performer,” he said.
“It has nothing to do with Ambitiouz.”
The 35-year-old said there would be transparency at the label.
“Most of the time when people have a bad experience at a label and start their own, they treat new signees how they were treated.
“Ruff and I are going to change that. We are going to be transparent with the four artists we have at our label.”
Co-owner Ruff said he was very excited. “It has been an inspiring experience. The new album draws from different genres: African trap, maskandi, hip-hop, poetry, classical and soul,” he said.
