THE South African Music Awards has announced the recipients of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Musical icons Lindelani Mkhize, Penelope “PJ Powers” Dunlop and Lebo M will be honoured during the awards ceremony at the end of this month.
Speaking to Daily Sun Lindelani, who is one of the founding members of Joyous Celebration, said he was honoured.
“I really didn’t expect this. I am overwhelmed, but grateful because this honour comes at a time when the creative industry is facing a tough time. It serves as motivation and encouragement not to give up no matter how tough things get. I’d like to thank everyone who supported me from the start of my career up until today, especially those who allowed my input into their music as I would not be the musical director I am today if they hadn’t given me a chance.”
He said he plans to convince government to start taking the creative industry seriously.
PJ Powers said she’s happy she’s being honoured while she is still alive.
“I’m very excited and humbled. This is one of the greatest musical honours any musician can receive.”
Although she recently turned 60, PJ Powers said she didn’t plan to stop anytime soon.
“I believe I still have a lot to offer. I’m busy creating new music and will start shooting my feature documentary at the end of July.”
Master KG, whose real name is Kgaogelo Moagi, will receive the International Achievement Recognition Award.
Congratulating the recipients, RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said there was no doubt the recipients were worthy and deserving.
“It’s our singular honour at the Samas to bestow these accolades to Lindelani Mkhize, PJ Powers, Lebo M and Master KG.
“Theirs are stories of inspiration and accomplishments that are unmatched. We salute them and wish them only the best in their careers,” she said.
