Rapper Duncan, real name Sphamandla Mbambo was recently homered by the Durban harbor SAPS.
He was given an award for writing music that makes sense.
Duncan told Daily Sun he was grateful for the award.
“This means a lot to me. I think this award concludes everything for me. I have set the record,” he said.
He said that being recognised by the police meant that he was doing something right.
“My music is like that. It always aims at inspiring,” he said.
He said with his music, he doesn’t want to promote hate speech, violence and the abuse of alcohol and drugs.
“I always try to send a message that will inspire and change someone’s life,” he said.
He said he composed his music as per the lessons he learned when growing up.
“Growing up, I realised that violence, alcohol, and drugs do not help and that’s why I do not promote it, I want people to learn important lessons when they listen to my music,” he said.
He said he won’t judge those who do their music that way.
“It’s how they see things. Who am I to judge them,” he asked.
Duncan told the People’s paper that he is not sure which song was selected that won him the award because all his songs are inspirational.
“But I think it’s Nkosisikelela, my latest song,” he said.
On the song, Duncan said:“I know people who sleep without food but who pray evetime before sleeping. I know fake pastors who go to healers and consume muthi wanting powers. I know people who would be jealous of you and hold you by heart when your things go well. I know friends who talk bad about you, who laugh with you but gossip about you when you leave. I know families that suspect one another of witchcraft when their things don’t go well. I know men who are beaten by women and when they open cases at police stations they are laughed at. I know a criminal who goes to hustle and give his mom money to go to church. I know a kid who had no food at school. I know a guy who got arrested for things he never did.”
A national police spokesman told Daily Sun that the Unit service excellence awards recognize the good people do in the community and honor them for that.
