T HE iconic life of Queen Nandi will be celebrated through a play titled Queen Nandi The Musical .
The queen of the Zulu nation was regarded as a woman of high esteem.
She also birthed the legendary and great warrior, King Shaka Zulu KaSenzangakhona.
Those who want to know more about this historic family will get a chance when the production is staged at the Playhouse Company in Durban from Friday, 25 February to Sunday, 27 February.
The writer and director Edmund Mhlongo said this year there will be two strong actresses who will portray Queen Nandi.
“There will be a day show and a night show.
“So the first queen will perform during the day show and the other at night,” said Mhlongo.
Actress Angel Zuma and Ntokozo Ngcobo had the privilege to have been chosen for the role.
Mhlongo said he decided to choose actresses from KZN, a province that is the home to Queen Nandi and her son King Shaka.
He said the two actresses beautifully portray Queen Nandi as one of the strongest and bravest women in the Zulu nation.
“Queen Nandi is the everlasting symbol of hard work, patience and determination.

“She wasn’t married to King Senzangakhona, who was King Shaka’s father but she succeeded in raising a great leader of the Zulu nation.
“So strong young women had to be chosen to play her role. Her lifestyle and struggles had to be told,” said Mhlongo.
According to Wikipedia, Queen Nandi was born in 1760 and died of dysentery in October 1827.
She was impregnated by Senzangakhona out of wedlock.
After her relationship with Senzangakhona ended, Queen Nandi had to move from one place to another in an attempt to protect her son from being harmed by enemies, assassination and famine.
