IMBEWU: The Seed actress Portia Ncwane is happy to score another role dealing with the law.

After playing prison warder Slindile Ngwenya on Imbewu: The Seed, she has scored the role of a detective on Mzansi Magic’s new drama series, Umkhokha.

Her character, Detective Latha, made her debut on screens on Sunday, 7 November.

She said Detective Latha is one of the good detectives on the show. Portia from Newlands East, north of Durban, told SunBuzz she’s over the moon to play characters in the law to take her career to another level while learning more about the law.

“When I first auditioned earlier this year for the show, I had been waiting to hear back from production for some time. I was then offered the role of Detective Latha.

“Most of the roles I get have something to do with the law. My last role on Imbewu: The Seed on e.tv was Slindile Ngwenya, a village girl who moved to Durban to become a prison warder. Now I’m playing a detective,” she said.

Portia, who is also a dance choreographer and the founder of Portia Ncwane Foundation, has also appeared in the Showmax film titled Love Lives Here.

She said Detective Latha will be solving cases but targeting MaMzobe.

“She is after the villain Mamzobe, who always gets things done her way. It will be quite challenging for Latha to get to the bottom of the truth about Mamzobe and her dealings,” she said.

Portia said it has been a beautiful experience to be surrounded by the likes of Mbuso Khoza and Sthandiwe Kgoroge and other new faces of the industry.

“I always look forward to working with new talent because I know they always bring the heat and they always give 100%.

She said she works closely outside of the show Umkhokha with Mbuso, who is one of the cultural experts and a good friend of hers.

Portia said she’s grateful to producers such as Duma Ndlovu and Mandla kaNozulu, who bring about these amazing African stories and provide opportunities to KZN actors. She said after everything eases with Covid-19, she plans on going back to the United States to continue with her studies.
