IT’S probably every singer’s dream to reach gold for their projects.
But legendary maskandi singer Phuzekhemisi is not impressed by the gold disc celebrations of less than 20 000 sales.
He said the lack of good quality music in Mzansi is sad.
“I have so many albums and about 20 gold discs. I never sold less than 25 000 for all my gold discs. And I’m proud of that,” said Phuzekhemisi, whose real name is Zibokwakhe Mnyandu.
The legend said his secret to success is making good quality music which has a message, be it political or general.

“But I know that when I make music, I make sure that I tackle issues that affect people on the ground. Young artists can learn so much from legends like us. Our artists are poor because they settle for less. How can an artist celebrate selling of 15 000 units? It is unfortunate and sad. “I know the challenges such as piracy, but our youngsters are lucky now because technology also allows them to sell and promote their projects,” he said.
The singer, who was once arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly shot and killed his band member but later cleared in court, said that artists must learn to respect themselves and their fans.
“Don’t make that mistake of thinking that you’re bigger than music fans just because you’re becoming famous. Respect people. They’re the ones who buy your music. In fact, they’re your bosses. Make sure you work hard and humble yourself,” said Phuzekhemisi.
