Modjadji the rain queen forms a vital part of Mzansi history.

Her ability to make the skies cry at her whim makes her one of the most respected, loved royals.
But what is life without her?

Storyteller and director Carla Fonseca has given insight into life without Modjadji. She’s written and directed the play, Modjadji In Absentia. It will be staged at the Market Theatre Lab in Joburg from 24 - 28 July 2019.

Speaking to SunBuzz, Carla said: “A few years ago I discovered Modjadji the rain queen and found out she had not been ordained. There were actual archives or history records kept, and it’s an important part of history and our culture.

“The play is based on what our landscape is without her. Life without women in power is no life at all. Women are bringers of life and, just like no Modjadji without rain, there’s no life.”

The cast tackles the dilemma of what it is to live in a time of drought. Talking about the play, Carla said: “It’s not a biopic about Modjadji but addresses societal issues including gender-based violence, rape and crime in South Africa.

“It encourages people to empathise with one another, to stand up against unjust laws. But, more importantly, it highlights the desperate need for change.”
Actor TJ Ngoma brings the male energy into the play.
“The play is personal for each of us who’re involved in it. We all felt like we invested our hearts and souls in it.”

He promised the audience a great show.

Carla said: “Our ways have always been on the back burner versus popularity when it comes to our culture.” She said it took her and her team a year to put the play together.
“I want to earn the trust of people with it and would love for them to come and watch. I’m considering taking it overseas.”
