MASKANDI artist Khangelani “DSD” Mhlongo has called out opportunistic people who hijack the music industry.

He said people with no experience and knowledge of the music business are controlling the industry.

His Facebook post was prompted by Helman Mkhalele’s opportunity to coach Bafana Bafana.

Mkhalele is the first and the former Bafana Bafana player from the 1996 squad to coach the South African football team.

“This is also common in music industry. Musicians who have experience and understand the music business are usually sidelined. These music veterans are supposed to be sitting in music boards and making decisions on Awards. But this is not the case, because people with money are always in control of these positions in the end we as artists get exploited. We always get ripped off and die poor because of these people who lack understanding of being a musician. It is a disgrace that none of Bafana Bafana players who won Afcon got the opportunity to coach the team,” he said.

His Facebook fans could not agree more but they said artists themselves need to change the industry.

Speaking to Daily Sun, he said: “As a musician I’d like to see veteran artists holding strategic positions in music boards, music Awards and organizations. I’d like to see them making decisions that enhance the lives of artists. Unfortunately, most of these music organisations are full of people who lack understanding of being an artist. Many of them are greedy. They don’t have our interests at heart as a result we die poor.”

He said it is concerning that most veterans in the arts industry die a hundred times before their actual death.

“In South Africa, artists are silently killed before their actual death. For example, once their music stop playing on radio or TV, that’s the end of the road for them. It doesn’t matter how big an artist is, either way our artists are emotionally killed by the same people who are supposed to be taking care of them. I guess time has changed for us to ensure that artists remain relevant all the time,” he said.
