In a moving ceremony held at the Grace Bible Church in Pimville, Soweto loved ones gathered to bid farewell to Mama Mary Twala.
The veteran actress was laid to rest in the way she had asked just a day before her passing last Saturday, said her entertainer son Somizi Mhlongo.
"Today, she's in the most beautiful coffin and the most beautiful decoration. But also, it's because she asked for it. She said she wants a lot of flowers and she said it, funny enough, on Saturday. Before she passed on, she told the doctor that she wants a lot of flowers and she wants to be dressed in the same dress she wore at the wedding. At our wedding. And this is just for her," he said
"I might have lost a mother in this life but I have gained a powerful ancestor who loved me unconditionally," he said.
Somizi said he had planned to bury his mother in a cheap coffin with one rose on top because he took care of Mama Mary while she was still alive.
"A lot of people give their parents an extravagant send off to try and make it look like they were there for them, trying to ease their guilt. I have no point to prove because my mother was always a priority and a part of everything I did," he said.
Following necessary regulations brought on by Covid-19, only 50 attendees were allowed.
Among known faces were close friends to Somizi, Andile Ncube, Bonang Matheba ,Shawn Mkhize and gospel great Dr Rebecca Malope who sang throughout the service.
The sad news of Mama Twala’s passing at the age of 79 was announced on social media by Somizi on Saturday.
This after several days of her being admitted to Netcare’s Park Lane Hospital. The service which was live streamed has proceed to the graveside where Mama Twala will finally be laid to rest.
