AWARD-WINNING singer Makhadzi and Kicks Sportswear are gearing up to launch the range from their R120 million collaboration calledKokovha.

The Matorikisi hitmaker and the brand will launch on 9 December at Mall of Africa in Midrand, Joburg.

Speaking to SunBuzz, the founder of Kicks Sportswear Sammy Mhaule said they couldn’t wait to show people their products.

“There are a variety of products, and they will be available on our website and our stores from the 9th,” he said.

He said there’ll also be performances on the night.

“There’ll be a red carpet so people can take pictures. Then Makhadzi and I will reveal the products.

“And there will be performances from artists who are signed under the same label as her, Open Mic Productions,” he said.

Sammy said the products were all inspired by the singer and her love of music and culture.

“What we have done is we’ve taken her personality, what she normally wears and created a clothing range from that.

“We created different products that reflect where she comes from.

“We know that her fans want to connect with her because they enjoy seeing her embracing her culture, and we want to push that. We’ve probably created the first African sneaker that looks African and actually embraces us,” said Sammy.

He said they chose to work with Makhadzi because she stands for what they believe in

“The word kicks comes from kicking your failures and obstacles and putting in the work.

“And kicks are seen as something that’s not glamorous or good enough.

“We wanted to challenge that stereotype and we believe she’s the perfect symbol of what kicks stands for,” he said.

Sammy said that at the end of the deal next year, they’ll start a foundation called Kokovha Foundation.

“The foundation forms part of the deal. It will be launched at the end of next year. Makhadzi is very instrumental and passionate about young girls.

“So she wants to impact them, especially those from her hometown of Thohoyandou in Venda and change people’s lives.

“We’re also not excluding boys though. The foundation will uplift people in villages,” he said.
