MASKANDI artist Mzukulu and gqom singer Syabonga “Kullerbox’ Zondi are at each other’s throats.
At the core of the fight is the catchy Zulu phrase “sukuma mkami bakubone”, which means “stand up my wife so they can see you” in English.
Kullerbox claimed Mzukulu stole this phrase from him and used it in his song Ivila Laselawini. The phrase was first used in Kullerbox’s amapiano track iChoice Yami.
“This phrase has always been in the public domain, but I decided to use it in my song. Nobody else has ever thought of that,” he said.
“Mzukulu should have asked my permission or this is theft. He failed to be creative so he stole my idea.”

Kullerbox said he was informed by his fans that the phrase had been copied. “I then listened to Mzukulu’s song and I was disappointed to hear my phrase. I have nothing against him and I’m not going to do anything about this, but I want people to know he’s a thief.
“I also haven’t approached him about it. I feel it would be pointless because the song is out already.”
But Mzukulu denied all of Kullerbox’s accusations.
“First of all, I don’t know who Kullerbox is and I don’t know his music or song. Secondly, this phrase is in the public domain and isn’t owned by anyone,” he said.
“I feel this is an up-and-coming artist trying to get attention at my expense. I shall not entertain him and I will not stop using this phrase.”
